This completely revised second edition of Consciousness and Robot Sentience begins with the big problem of contemporary AI, namely AI’s inability to handle meanings. Computers handle symbols, not meanings. Unfortunately, without meanings there cannot be any understanding, and without understanding there cannot be any true intelligence. Ishmael speaks as a symbol of the sentience and intelligence of the rest of the world's life-forms that humans (at least humans in the "Taker" cultures — that is, basically everyone except for tribal cultures) have dismissed, because they see themselves as superior and removed from the rules that structure the evolution and survival of other.

But this is a special symbol font which means it does not use standard Unicode encoding. It is really just the symbol “&” using a book image. The advantage of using the Unicode version of the open book is that it will appear the same in any application which has an image at that code point in the future when more fonts have it.   THIS BOOK is the fully revised and updated second edition of "Consciousness and Robot Sentience". With lots of new material, it will provide new insights into artificial intelligence (AI) and machine consciousness, beyond materials published in the first edition.
